  • LTCZ Day 7: The Prodigal Son & A Fabulous Friday With Fatima

Yeah Day ~7:  I’m sore. I’ve been absent from EPA’s gym since late February (ie the Cruise). One month makes a huge difference in overall conditioning. I feel like I’m starting over again. I have limited form, muscle memory and stamina up against the speed bag, heavy bag, and focus mitts.

Fridays are super short days at the EPA gym. They open at 6PM and close at 7PM. However in that short and intense hour on April 9, I had the simple goal of just showing up and seeing if I could hit the speed bag and heavy bag. I got more than I bargained for.  The ring looked closed off and Fatima only had regular clothe and flip-flops on.  Since there were only 4 other people in the gym, Fatima was convinced into bringing out Johnny’s focus mitts for 2 young high school boys who wanted some ring time.  I ended up getting in for 1 round.

My first jabs were weak and tentative. Throwing punches in the air (as in Cardio Kickboxing with Eric at Gold’s Gym) is extremely easy when compared to focusing on a speed bag or heavy punching bag.  But it’s REALLY different when you’re hitting a focus mitt. You really have to focus on hitting that little 2 inch circle in the mitt with speed, form, and power. There is a certain sound and cadence to how ring training with the focus mitts. Last night it was absent. So there are many things to improve. Before the Cruise, my jabs and crosses were making good progress.  Now gone. Hooks and uppercuts. Ugh poor.  Speed and stamina are definitely down.  Fatima drilled non-stop punching within the last minute and a half of the 3 minute round and my aerobic conditioning, breathing and overall form from February are definitely gone.  My defensive position is poor too. I kept dropping my right hand on my left hooks or uppers. I got smacked in the head too many times for dropping.  One month of conditioning, had me better prepared for the 2 or 3 times in the ring with Johnny in retrospect.

In Jan and Feb, I had gone to the EPA gym 4 weeks straight at least 3-4 times a week. This was great for boxing but bad in other areas as I had let my resistance training slip.  Anyway I’m glad I got in on Friday.  One month makes a difference but 3 minutes in the ring is like a magnifying glass on everything I need to work on.

  • LTCZ Day 4: Who’s the Champ ?!?

    Day 4: Monday 02.02

    The Chant:

    Johnny: “Who’s the Champ?”

    Reply: “I’m the Champ!”

Johnny: “I didn’t hear you! Who’s the Champ?”

    Reply: “I’m the Champ!”

    Johnny: “I work hard!”

    Reply: “Everyday!”

    Johnny: “Represent!”

    Reply: “E.P.A.!”

    Johnny: “Get in my way!”

    Reply: “You goin’ pay!”

Johnny: “They might call me crazy”

    Reply: “But I ain’t lazy!”

I feel like I discovered an incredible treasure in EPA.  Some people pay $100′s of dollars for Boot Camp training in premium bourgeois gyms like 24 Hour Fitness, Equinox and Golds.  Yeah, bougie gyms are these. No place to get your aggressions out on a punching bag in these pristine establishments.  $50 bucks a month at EPABC gets me access to the gym and trainers for 4 hours a day, Monday through Friday.  The hours are somewhat convenient from 6AM to 8AM then 6PM to 8PM.

Monday night was nothing like last Monday.  I succeeded in completing all 11 bags on the bag wall !

2 Speed bags.  2 Slingshot bags.  7 Heavy Bags.  Victory!

Things to focus on for the future?

    - Technique
    - Movement
    - Intensity

    Technique:
I threw 3 different punches on the heavy bags: Jab, Cross and Hooks.  There’s so many little things to remember: don’t drop your hands, keep your right hand up after a punch, turn your body for the hooks, twist your foot in on crosses and hooks.  I actually threw 4 punches, if you count the uppercuts on the 3rd bag, El Gordo.  The 6 Regular heavy bags aren’t set up for uppers, I’m glad  it’s there to break things up.  I still have a long way to go for the speedbag.  I don’t have the cadence down yet.  But I can’t expect to be an expert in 4 days.

    Movement:
If I had a video of what I do, I probably look like a statue.  I need to learn how to stick and move.  Stay light on my feet.

    Intensity:
I purposely didn’t hit with 100% intensity.  Over time, I’ll focus on power.  Hopefully, I find the stamina to hit all bags with at least 50% power.

I got in at 6:20 or so.  Time flew.  The last 20 minutes were a special treat according to Johnny for those who hadn’t been in the gym for over a year.  Johnny devoted this time to calisthenics.  I had no idea what to expect but we did pushups, crunches, and jumping jacks.

I’ve been trying to get to 100 consecutive pushups on a program I’ve been following at http://www.hundredpushups.com . I’ve gotten to 50 consistently but I’m currently in a rut and havent been able to break through since I’ve not been consistent in training on the pushups.  Johnny’s workout was a challenge.  We started with 30 consecutive pushups but after 25 minutes of punching I had no strength to do all 30.  What I didn’t know was that we count down in reps from 30 consecutive down to 29 to 28 to 27 to 26 to 25.  That’s 165 in about 5 minutes!

We then get on our backs and did 100 crunches.  50 right oblique crunches then 50 lefties.  I thought that was tough until the 6 Inches drill.  You essentially lift your legs off the ground at least 6 inches.  This was tough.  Johnny walks around in the ring encouraging everyone and reminding us not to drop our feet.  Simple and effective.

The physical conditioning continues with the countdown from 20 pushups to 19, 18, 17 and so on to 10.  Again this is 165 pushups.  Somewhere in this pushup drill we get back down and do bicycle crunches then jumping jacks.

In the last 5 minutes we did arm circles – 60 forward.  Then keep your arms out straight for a minute or so.  Then 60 in reverse.  My shoulders were burning!  Then again a static pose with your arms straight out for a minute or so.  Phew!!!

During the ab exercises and shoulder exercises, Johnny gave me something else to focus on other than the pain with the Chant (see above).  I like the fact that in a group setting everyone can see if you are not doing the exercise.  The peer pressure is an effective motivator to keep me going along with the Chant!

    NEW SKILLS:
    - 6 Inches
    - Charlie Brown Jumping Jacks (link here)
    - Arm circles

    Tuesday awaits…

    I wonder what’s in store???

  • LTCZ Day 3: Who Runs This Town ! ? !

    Johnnie: “Who runs this town?!?”

    Response: “Nobody”

    Johnnie: “Represent:”

    Response: “E.P.A.!!!”

Johnnie: “They might call me crazy!”

    Response: “But I ain’t lazy!”

    Johnnie: “Where my dogs at?”

    Response: “Woof Woof Woof”

Day 3: A Run Through EPA
    Wednesday 01.27:
Wednesdays are special.  The gym runs 3 miles through East Palo Alto.  To be honest, I was nervous.  One, I had not run outside for quite a while.  I’d guess 6-8 months, if not more.  I had tried to arrange short 1 mile runs with work colleagues but we couldn’t get our schedules to align.  So much for breaking in slowly.  Second, I had imagined running in EPA was like running through East Orange (NJ).  Not exactly, safe.  I’m guilty of common sterotypes of EPA.  I was pleasantly surprised.

EPA is quite clean and relatively safe after dark in the +3 miles we ran.  There were about 25 or so of us running in formation thru EPA.  We were led by Fatima A while Johnnie Gray Jr. ran on the opposite side of the street, encouraging us with tidbits about why we run (to build endurance and stamina when in the ring) and with a running chant.  It was awesome!  Yelling back the response as a group was motivating and intimidating.  It was like being on a locomotive chugging along the streets of EPA.  Can’t wait to do it again this coming Wednesday.

Time flew on Wednesday.  We had a late start on the run at about 6:35PM.  It was dark but cool and pleasant compared to the previous Wednesday.   Back in the gym by about 7:10PM, which didn’t leave time to work on many bag drills.  8:00PM snuck up quick!

    NEW SKILLS:

    • Run outdoors
    • Hand wrapping 101
    • Hooks into heavy bag
    • Focus Pads

Thursday 01.30: No Boxing in EPA.  Went back to the comfort zone and went to Erik’s Kickboxing Class.  Did step out of the comfort zone by putting on the gloves.  Hitting the focus pads is tougher than it looks the first time around.  Ok – I rack that up as a new skill…

Friday: 01.29: Nightmare on the 101
It was raining.  Getting to the 101 Northbound from Page Mill was a nightmare.  Took me 45 minutes to go about 4 miles.  Get to the gym and it’s closed…  Oh well, I tried in earnest! Hit Gold’s instead…
